Military mail moves within the United States via the USPS transportation network to one of the major a USPS mail processing facilities on either the east coast or west coast. If the mail class is First-class, Priority or Express Mail it will move from the major airport gateway in the US to an overseas airport gateway on commercial US owned aircraft to overseas locations. From the overseas airport gateways, mail is then moved by various methods to the designated post offices for delivery to the individual.

Military Mail Transit Times
Theater Air Moved Surface Moved
EUROPEAN 7 DAYS 30 DAYS (MPSA Goal)
SOUTHWEST ASIA 10.5 to 13.4 DAYS LETTER 11.1 to 13.2 DAYS PRIORITY PARCEL NO SURFACE
CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA 7 DAYS NO SURFACE
PACIFIC 7 DAYS 30 DAYS (MPSA Goal)
AFRICA 15-18 DAYS 45-60 DAYS (MPSA Goal)
Mail posted at standard rate postage will move on surface (ships) from seaports in the US to overseas seaports and then moved by various means to the designated post office and the individual.
Due to the lack of timely sealift to some countries, mail will be upgraded to space available on aircraft. Military aircraft are used to also move special services mail (registered) and to locations where commercial carriers do not operate. Foreign carriers are also used especially between countries in the overseas theaters.

Mail going to personnel through the Military Postal Service is subject to the host country customs requirements and parcels and packets require customs forms. Consult your local USPS post office for specific requirements. Mail coming into the US from the Military Postal Service is subject to US Customs clearance.
